Horst Spielmann - President of EUSAAT

Dear colleagues,

on behalf of EUSAAT - European Society for Alternatives to Animal Testing, ESTIV - European Society of Toxicology in vitro and zet - Austrian Centre for Alternative and Complementary Methods to Animal Testing, I cordially invite you to the "Linz-Congress 2010".

Over the years the "Linz-Congress" has become become one of the major international scientific events in the field of the 3Rs and this year it will be the European Congress on Alternatives to Animal Testing.

We are very pleased that in 2010 the "Linz-Congress" will be held in cooperation with ESTIV as  “ESTIV 2010 - the 16th International Congress on In Vitro Toxicology”. For the first time these two congresses will be held together and we are sure that the cooperation between ESTIV and EUSAAT will facilitate a high scientific level in presentations, discussions and exchange of new ideas for the benefit of alternative methods to animal experiments.

The organising committee has invested its efforts to address all of the subjects of interest to scientists in Europe, who are interested in the 3Rs. English will be the official congress language.

The participants will be updated on new approaches and methodologies, e.g. -omics-techniques or the correlation between in vitro data and human data will be subjects of the lectures and poster presentations and a wide sprectrum of toxicological effects will be addressed as well as cross-cutting.

The program of the congresses in Linz traditionally also focuses on legal and ethical aspects and on standardising and and harmonising in vitro approaches, specifically on good cell culture practices.

We will also provide a forum for reviewing the latest developments in the European chemicals and cosmetics policy in context with the use of alternatives methods. Another hot topic is the revision of the EU-directive 86/609, which will affect European scientists working in academia, industry and government institutions in the life sciences.

As in the past on purpose we will avoid parallel sessions in Linz and give a high priority to poster presentations. The best and most innovative posters will be awarded, which may motivate young scientists to effectively contribute to the development and application of alternative methods in Europe.

Located in the center of Europe, Linz is a typically charming Austrian city with an excellent mixture of science, culture and economy. Moreover, the Linz congresses have in the past have provided an excellent, informal environment for scientists interested in the 3Rs to exchange ideas, meet old friends and make new ones.

We will try our best to make your stay enjoyable and we are looking forward to seeing you in Linz this fall.

On behalf of the Organising Committee

with the best wishes

Horst Spielmann
President of EUSAAT
Representative of ESTIV
